Robopets in Senior Living

Robopets in Senior Living

While pet- or animal assisted therapy has been used in senior care communities for several years and has been found to be an effective non-pharmacological therapy that can improve overall well-being and decrease challenging behaviors; most recently, the interest has turned to robopets, or socially assistive companion robots that look and behave like companion animals or pets.

The term “Robopets” was first coined by Peter Eachus in 2001 in an article published in the International Journal of Health Promotion and Education. In it, he stressed the findings on real companion pets and the physical, emotional and mental benefits they have on their owners. They reduce stress and offer unconditional support. He then introduced the idea that robopets can have the same results.

Dr. Rebecca Abbott and her research team followed up many years later to review what the science was saying about robopets and the health outcomes of seniors living in residential care homes. They found studies reporting that positive behavior responses like touching, petting, holding and hugging the robopet were common. Robopets also seemed to provide entertainment and stimulation to residents who were sad or restless.

Other findings:

  • Robopets gave seniors something to look after
  • Robopets gave seniors someone to talk to and confide in
  • They awakened positive memories when residents had their own pets
  • They provided a positive sensory experience
  • They help with feelings of identity and belonging
  • They provided social contact and reduced loneliness
  • They increased pleasure and joy, comfort and safety
  • They reduced symptoms of dementia-associated behaviors

While the study did report that some seniors wanted nothing to do with the Robopets, and didn’t produce as many positive effects, the overall outcome of these robotic companions was found to be beneficial to most seniors living in residential care homes. If your care community doesn’t have real or Robopets, maybe it’s time to invest in one or two.
