There is growing interest in the role of CBD and the endocannabinoid system and various functions of the brain like cognitive processing and memory. Research using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear medicine imaging (positron emission tomography or PEET and single-emission computed tomography or SPECT) have yielded very interesting results. Learning how CBD impacts brain functions may one day yield neurotherapeutic agents that can enhance cognitive health.
Neuroimaging Studies
According to Batalla (2021), ”Neuroimaging techniques provide a highly useful insight into the human neural processes involved in the behavioral effects of cannabinoids. An increasing number of neuroimaging studies have been performed to examine the human neural mechanisms underlying the effects of CBD.” Through a highly complex interplay between CBD, the endocannabinoid system and various parts of the brain, researchers have discovered that CBD influences processes within the hippocampus, amygdala and hypothalamus, each responsible for memory processing, decision-making, emotional processing, and stress response.
Final Thoughts on CBD and Brain Function
Because of CBD’s impact on these regions of the brain, special memory, researchers believe one day a neurotherapeutic agent may be developed that will enhance various functions of the brain including short- and long-term and spatial memory. Perhaps one day CBD will be formulated to reduce stress responses and bring about emotional balance. Only time and a lot more research in the impact of CBD on regions of the brain will tell.
