There’s no shortage of medications and treatments proclaiming to help with appetite control and weight loss. While some may be effective, they also may come with unpleasant and sometimes dangerous side effects. Interest in plant-based remedies have led some researchers to explore the effects of CBD on appetite and the findings are promising.
CBD’s “Anorexigenic” Effect
Decades of research into the health benefits of CBD have shown that it interacts within the endocannabinoid system to moderate numerous biological processes including pain modulation, anti-nausea effects, energy balance, immune function and even memory and learning. Researchers have also found CBD to have anorexigenic effects, meaning decreased appetite which can be correlated with decreased body weight.
How Does CBD Decrease Appetite?
CBD or cannabidiol, is a weak agonist of the receptor CB1, meaning that it activates this receptor to work in the endocannabinoid system as well as other physiological systems in the body. On the other hand, CBD is an antagonist or inhibitor of CB2 receptors, meaning that CBD binds with CB2, but inhibits activation. According to Pinto and Fatima (2022), “Cannabinoids are also an important player in the reward circuitries”.
The Endocannabinoid System
A great amount of activity takes place within the endocannabinoid system among the activation or inhibitory impact of CBD on its receptors, ultimately affecting hunger and satiety (feeling full). CBD may control appetite, just as it helps to regulate other important physiological processes like sleep, pain perception and mood.
Final Thoughts on CBD and Appetite Control
While there are many products on the market that promise appetite regulation and potential weight loss, some treatments come with concerning side effects. More attention has been paid to natural, plant-based remedies including CBD. So far, the research is showing some promising results. Only more research and time will confirm if CBD can become a viable weight loss solution.
